In case you’ve missed the memo, this Sunday is Mother’s Day. While some may say that everyday should be Mother’s Day, I like the idea of one day when you get to do something a little extra and celebratory for your mom.
Each year we put up a Mother’s Day post celebrating mom’s. Last year we asked some foodies to share their mom’s favourite recipe, the year before we wanted to know the best lesson your mom taught you. This year we’re turning it around and asking the moms. I asked 4 new moms to share how motherhood has changed them.

How has being a mom changed you?
Becoming a mom has taught me a lot about myself. I have learnt how strong I am, how amazing my body truly is and how to put another before my own needs and desires. I have learnt patience, how to be a better person in the hopes of raising a well-rounded child and how to better use the hours I am given in a day!
What did you find the most surprising thing about being a mom?
The biggest surprise in becoming a mom has to be the amount of love and respect you have for yourself. The fact that my body helped make and grow another human life in just nine months and has nourished my child in producing breastmilk for my child for the past two years has honestly been a massive lesson in self-love. I have never loved and respected my body more and I am so proud of myself for growing my perfectly healthy child and persevering through my very hard but hugely rewarding breastfeeding journey.
What’s your favourite thing about being a mom?
The love! Knowing that this little girl is my daughter and I will get to love her for the rest of my life is the best feeling! She is mine and I will forever be hers to love and hold. The little kisses and hugs and I love yous are just melt your heart kind of stuff! Only a mother can understand the love of having a child! It is honestly indescribable!

How has being a mom changed you?
Being a mom has brought a sense of peace within me and I am surprised by how maternal I am, I didn’t expect it. It is not easy, but it is wonderful.
What did you find the most surprising thing about being a mom?
Everyone warned me how tough motherhood is – it is true – but I expected worse. I am also surprised how such a little person can rule an adult’s world! I am also surprised how little sleep a human needs! I used to like sleep and thought I would struggle – but you adapt so quickly!
What’s your favorite thing about being a mom?
Those little sneaky smiles at the beginning, they are scarce and such a treat. Then of course: there is nothing as beautiful as a sleeping baby!!
Rozanne Mckenzie
Rozanne is mom to James, 4 and Fallon, 7 months
How has being a mom changed you?
Being a mom has made me a lot less selfish. Before I had kids, the only person I was responsible for was myself. Now, their happiness and wellbeing is the most important thing to me.
What did you find the most surprising thing about being a mom?
The thing that’s surprised me the most about being a mom is how little sleep I can now function on and also the total unfiltered opinion that I get from my 4-year old daily! Honestly, I am surprised every day by how much I love them and how quickly that happened.
What’s your favorite thing about being a mom?
I used to love just seeing my son develop his own little quirks and personality and I love seeing that with my daughter too, but now my favourite thing about being a mom is seeing how much my kids love each other. The bond between them is so strong already and it’s just awesome to see.

How has being a mom changed you?
I’m still battling to get my six pack back😀 Being a mom is not about what you gave up to have a child, It is all about what you have gained. I have so much more gratitude for my parents now that I’m a mom.
What did you find the most surprising thing about being a mom?
The most surprising thing about motherhood is with how little sleep you can manage on a day to day basis. As a professional runner I could hardly function without an afternoon nap in the past. Now afternoon naps are just a distant memory.
What’s your favorite thing about being a mom?
My favorite part of being a mom is to experience the world through the eyes of Karli. I have rediscovered the wonder and appreciation of the small things in life.
Happy Mother’s Day!
