  1. Cape Town Cycle Tour

Thursday, 3 March – Sunday, 6 March

Location: Cape Town

It’s the biggest week in road cycling in South Africa with the Cape Town Cycle Tour and related events.

The expo starts on Thursday and runs through to Saturday. There’s the Junior Cycle Tour on Saturday and the main event – the Cape Town Cycle Tour on Sunday.

This year is the 38th year of the tour and it has become the he largest, timed cycling event in the world. 35 000 cyclists are expected to line up to do the 109km route through Cape Town’s picturesque roads. Are you one of them?

  1. Medihelp Sunrise Monster, Mini and Baby Monster

Saturday, 5 March

Location: Groenkloof – Pretoria

This is called the sunrise monster for a reason. The main event (32km) starts at sunrise 6.03am and is a monster of a route. Making up for the undulating route that will have you climbing for miles, is the scenery as you make your way through 12 of Pretoria’s suburbs.

Also on offer is a 10km and 5km run.

  1. World Naked Bike Ride Cape Town

Saturday, 5 March

Location: Sea Point Library, Cape Town

You may not have to pay to take part in this bike ride, but you will have part with something….your clothes. The World Naked Bike Ride is a global initiative taking place in 70 cities. Those in the Southern Hemisphere will all take part in the Naked Bike Ride on the 5th of March.

The aim of the ride is to create awareness around environmental issues, celebrate the power and individuality of the human body, and highlight the dangers faced by cyclists on local road.

  1. Cape Gate Vaal Marathon & Half Marathon

Sunday, 6 March

Location: Dick Fourie Stadium, Vereeniging

A popular race in the Gauteng region, many runners choose to do their Comrades Qualifying times here.

A flat double lap route allows for many a PB – although you’ll have to work for it the entire 42km. If you want something shorter, do the 21km (just one lap of the 42km). Word to the wise, get to the venue early and line up early. It’s a packed race and for those going for time, you don’t want the added stress of trying to fight the crowds to get started.

  1. Eikendal Weintaufe Harvest Celebration

Sunday, 6 March

Location: Eikendal Wine Estate, Stellenbosch

This annual grape stompfest is geared towards the entire family. The festival celebrates the end of the grape harvest and has wide array of activities on offer. You can stomp on grapes, enjoy wine samplings, take part in a game of golf, or a tractor ride, or just enjoy a fresh from the farm meal. Don’t worry about entertaining your kids – with face painting, jumping castles and more, there’s plenty to keep them happy and occupied.
