  1. Old Mutual Om Die Dam Ultra Marathon

Saturday, 12 March

Location: Hartbeespoort, North West Province

This year, Om Die Dam will be held at a new location and have a new route. An incredibly popular race, it is the largest inland ultra-marathon in South Africa and will see over 7000 runners participating in the 50km, 21km and 10km runs.

It is also a champion chip race, so make sure to wear your chip to get an official time especially if you are using it as a Comrades Qualifier.

  1. Tortoise Tuff 30km and 21km Goukamma Trail Run

Saturday, 12 March

Location: Sedgefield Primary School – Sedgefield

This year marks the 19th Tortoise Tuff Trail race, which incorporates the ASWD 10km race walking trails.

While each route is tough and undulating, the 30km is the most challenging race along the Garden Route.

  1. Hout Bay Sandcastle Competition

Saturday, 12 March

Location: Hout Bay, Atlantic Seaboard South

Grab the kids, some buckets and spades and head down to Houtbay to build sandcastles. This annual competition is open to all ages and teams of up to 8 people, and is held to raise funds for educational bursaries to the Hout Bay Valley Pre-Primary School and for essential therapeutic interventions for children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Aside from building elaborate sandcastles, there will be plenty entertainment and drinks for the entire family.

  1. Sarens Edenvale Marathon

Sunday, 13 March

Location: Edenvale High School, Edenvale

The Sarens Marathon is an official Comrades Qualifier. Runners’ Guide rates this undulating double lapper a 3 as it has both down and uphills throughout the course.

It’s a decent race, with good support throughout, giving Comrades hopefuls a chance to PB and get in a good qualifying time.

For shorter distance runners there is also a 21.1km and a 5km fun run.

  1. Absa Cape Epic

Sunday, 13 March – Sunday, 20 March

Location: Starts from the University of Cape Town

The Absa Cape Epic is known as the “Untamed African Mountain Bike Race” and takes riders on an 8 day epic adventure through some of the Cape’s most challenging trails.

This endurance event sees some of the world’s most elite professional and amateur riders traverse 647km of some of the most beautiful and unforgiving routes in the Western Cape.

Now in its 13th  year, 600 teams of two will compete over a new course that may be shorter than previous years but will feature more climbing per kilometre than ever before.
