5 Things to do this week that will get you and the whole family out the house and outdoors
Wednesday, 27 April
Location: Muizenberg Beach, Cape Town
This race runs on the beach with high tide being the cute off time. There is a 20km, 10km and 6km route – all of which are out and back. There are no water tables so bring your own hydration.
The X-Berg X-Treme Challenge
Thursday, 28 April – Sunday, 1 May
Location: Mountain Splendour Eco Resort – Champagne Valley – Drakensberg
The X-Berg Challenge is a unique concept where the challengers must either fly, run or cycle through pre-set “dots/turn-points” in the mighty Drakensberg. The length of the race is measured according to the straight line connecting the dots or turn points. It is approximately 150km. The first athlete to reach goal at the end of the route will be crowned “King of the Berg”. But there are also prizes to be won in each class.
Ingeli Sky Marathon and Trail Run
Saturday, 30 April
Location: Green Point Stadium Athletics Stadium, Cape Town
The Ingeli SkyMarathon forms one of the 9 sanctioned South African SkyRunning Series for 2016. It is a challenging mix of forest single track, climbing mountain paths, dirt jeep track and cut grass paths that leads runners to the highest parts of the Ingeli Mountain.
The 21km Mountain is the mini version of the full challenge, but should not be underestimated. It is still a tough, challenging and scenic route in itself.
There are also 10km and 5km forest trail events. These do not venture onto Ingeli Mountain, but still involve a few steep climbs and descents through the forested area.
Colgate Road Race
Sunday, 1 May
Location: Boksburg City Stadium
The Colgate Road Race is held in Boksburg and offers a 15km and 32km route. The 32km is a double lap of the 15km and is undulating.
MiWay Wally Hayward Marathon
Monday, 2 May
Location: Hoërskool Zwartkop, Centurion
A fast route, the marathon double laps the 21.1km route. It is a Comrades qualifier and for many the last marathon pre-Comrades. There is also a 21.1km, 10km and 5km fun run.
