7 Ways to Celebrate Mandela Day

This Monday, 18 July is Mandela Day. Launched in 2009, it has become a global movement to honour Nelson Mandela’s life’s work and act to change the world for the better. On Mandela it is encouraged to spend 67 minutes of giving back to society.

To help you get in you 67 minutes, we’ve rounded up some cool events and initiatives happening in honour of Mandela Day.

 

Love Our Trails – Platteklip Gorge Clean Up

Join Blake Dyason for a unique hike up Table Mountain. Together with a group of people, Blake will set out to climb Table Mountain and enjoy nature while picking up litter along the way and cleaning graffiti. Bags, gloves and cleaning equipment will be provided, all you need to come with is snacks, water and sunblock. It’s open to all ages and fitness levels, but is a great way for trail runners to give back to the parts of nature they get so much from.

Mandela Day Yoga

Join Steven from Yoga Works on Constitution hill for a 27 pose yoga session where each pose is held for 67 seconds.  After the Yoga session, you’ll be able to go on a guided tour around Constitution Hill and learn about important events in the history of South Africa that took place there.

To link into Mandela Day, Yoga Works is working together with the Alexandra Education Committee. 50 high school students from Alex will be invited to this event, and attendees can choose to sponsor them. You can also bring old book, toys, clothes and blankets to be donated

Show Your Sole for Mandela Day

Planet Fitness has set a goal to put shoes on the feet of 15 000 people for Mandela Day and break the Guinness World Record for the longest chain of shoes. To get involved all you need to do is collect your old shoes and drop them off at your nearest Planet Fitness

Mandela Day – Yoga, Arts and Children

Everybody Loves Everybody will be hosting a special Mandela Day Yoga class under trees. The session will be followed by arts and crafts and snacks. Proceeds from the day go to their charities and there will also be donation boxes where you can donate toys, books, food, clothing etc.

Mandela Day Secret Sunset for CMI

The Secret Sunrise team have joined hands with The Children’s Memorial Institute to bring you a Secret Sunset for Mandela Day. The Mandela Day Secret Sunset Event will comprise of a 67 minute celebration of yoga, meditation and dancing.

Proceeds from the event will go towards the securing of the new playground on the CMI grounds, which is in need of gates and fences to keep the children safe.

SWEAT 1000 Mandela Day Workout

SWEAT 1000 will be changing their workouts on Mandela Day so that every workout is 67 minutes long. In addition they will be raising money for the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital.

CAP Mandela Day Blood Drive

The Community Active Protection organisation aka CAP is partnering with SANBS to host a blood drive in honor of Mandela Day. This initiative is to help SANBS National Blood Supply which is running critically low. Without sufficient blood supplies, people who urgently need blood transfusions will not be able to have them.
