To run is to love simplicity. All you need is a good pair of takkies, some open road and you’re good to go. Or are you? Most runners will assure you thats there’s more to running than a good pair of takkies. There are the socks, watch, heart rate monitor, perfect playlist and the running shorts. A good pair of running shorts can make you forget you’re wearing anything (in the best way possible), a bad pair leads to irritation or worse – the dreaded chafe.

We’ve sifted through the newest and best running shorts for women on offer this summer. Scrutinising the prices, fabrics and add-ons.  We then set out on many runs to test out each pair in real life conditions and report back. The result? Asics fuzeX shorts

The high waistband is what makes these shorts so unique and what immediately stood out. They’re incredibly flattering when worn with just a sports bra and allow you to go without a shirt but still offer some coverage. The special stretch woven fabric means they move when you do, so you don’t feel them whilst you run. They’re also incredibly lightweight and have knit inserts in the sides to keep you cool. Comfortable, stylish and a large zipped pocket make these a favourite running short. We’d happily run a marathon distance in them.

Good to Know

Sizing | Runs true to size. The Asics fuzeX shorts are available from extra small to extra-large.

Comfort | these are incredibly comfortable and lightweight short, making them perfect for hot summers runs.  The waistband is soft and wide so it doesn’t dig into your skin.

Pockets | 1 zipped pocket on the side. They have one of the biggest pockets out of all the shorts. It’s large enough to fit your phone along with keys and gels. It also leans towards your bum, meaning your goodies stay put and won’t bounce up and down your thigh.

Noticeable Features | The waistband is high-waisted which makes them a great pair of shorts to wear with only a sports bra. They’re also a longer length short which means more leg coverage (and no butt cleavage!). They also come in a light blue material which is bright enough to be spotted in the distance.

Best for | The lightweight and moisture wicking fabric makes these great for long runs  and races during the hot summer months. The bright colour makes them a good choice for early morning or evening runs as you’ll be most visible. They are great shorts for any distance from 5K to marathon. The longer length makes them a good option for gym as well (they won’t flap up).

adidas M10 Q2 Shorts (Knit), R499

The Best Running Shorts for Women this Summer adidas m10 q2 women's short

The material and cut is what makes these a standout running short. They’re different without being too “loud” and are the perfect length and fit. The wide waistband hits just below your navel and is incredibly comfortable and doesn’t cut into you. adidas has perfectly combined style with functionality in these shorts and at R499 they’re a worthwhile investment to your running wardrobe.

Good to Know

Sizing | Runs true to size, but if you fluctuate between a small and xs, you can get away with the xs. The adidas  M10 Q2 Shorts come in extra small to extra-large.

Comfort | Incredibly comfortable. With a wide elasticised waistband and looser cut, these were one of the most comfortable shorts.

Pockets | 1 small pocket inside the front. It’s big enough to fit a key and a tampon.

Noticeable Features | The mesh overlay makes these shorts incredibly striking and the pattern reminds us of a summer’s sky. They’re a very flattering cut and are “loose” fit without being boxy or baggy.

Best for | The climalite fabric makes these shorts best for running in warmer conditions,  where you’ll be kept cool and dry. The bright color with the addition of reflective detailing make them great for early morning or evening runs. These are a great short for short to medium distance (21.1km).

Vivolicious Tech Shorts,  R450

The Best Running Shorts for Women this Summer - Vivolicious tech short

Locally made and designed by runners, Vivolivious is known for their bright prints. These tech shorts are made from a supportive and technical fabric making them not only comfortable but incredibly flattering and functional. They are a longer length short and do not ride up all, making them the perfect choice for runners who like tight shorts but want coverage. The waist band is wide and sits just below the navel making them comfortable and more flattering. These are a favourite for trail runs, especially over long distance as they hug your body, won’t chafe and give added sun protection. Not only do they feel good on, but they’re a feel-good purchase  as Vivolicious gives back a percentage of sales to the Flower Valley Trust fund for fynbos conservation.

Good to Know

Sizing | True to size. The Vivolicious Tech Shorts are available from size extra small to xx-large.

Comfort | One of the most comfortable tight shorts I’ve worn. The wide waistband is higher cut (just below the navel) making it more comfortable and flattering. They also have flat seams to avoid chaffing. Their double lined gusset also means no camel toe.

Pockets | 1 pocket on the right thigh. It’s a large pocket, which can fit an ipod, key, tissues and gels. As it’s not zipped, I’d advise against keeping a phone in it (which peaks out the top).

Noticeable Features | UPF30+ (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) CANSA approved making them great for trail running. They’re also a South African brand for those wanting to support local businesses.

Best for: Best for the runner who wants to be noticed (no plain fabrics here!), these are a great trail running tight for distances up into the ultra’s.

Lorna Jane Stay Cool Run Short, R999

The Best Running Shorts for Women this Summer - Lorna Jane stay cool short

As expected from Lorna Jane, these shorts are the most luxurious pair of running shorts we tried. They’re made from a sweat wicking and performance material, which keeps you cool and dry but feels soft and silky. They wide waistband with adjustable drawstring makes them super comfortable and the short scalloped legs make them flattering on. They’re a light and breezy short that are equally good in to run, gym and then do errands. Zissy found the looseness of the short a bit irritating on a long run as it flapped against her thigh, an issue Feige did not have so it may have been a sizing issue. At R999 they are on the higher price range, but they do fall into the athleisure range of running shorts, so you can get more than “running” wear out of them.

Good to Know

Sizing | These shorts are a very roomy cut. The size small was quite large, an extra-small in these would have been a better fit. We’d recommend sizing down on your regular Lorna Jane size. The Lorna Jane Stay Cool Running short is available from extra small to large.

Comfort | These are incredibly comfortable. They have a very luxurious feel material and are super breezy and light.

Pockets |   1 zipped pocket just above the bum, large enough to fit a phone or keys, ipod, gels or a foodbar. There’s two large hand pockets on either size, but I wouldn’t keep valuables in them as they don’t zip and are not that secure.

Noticeable Features | They have 3 good sized pockets. One zip pocket at the back and two side pockets. They’re also the most “stylish” pair of shorts making them great for running, gym or errands.

Best For | Breezy and light, they’re great for running on hot days and are comfortable enough to run a marathon in. They are also the most “athleisure” looking running short and the best all round pair. From running, to gym, to shopping they’ll be well worn.

Maaji Gleaming Canvas Shorts, R1550

The Best Running Shorts for Women this Summer - Maaji Gleaming Canvas Short

Maaji is known for their colourful swimwear and yoga wear, not running gear. These Gleaming canvas shorts however, are one of the best tight running short shorts I’ve ever worn. They’re made from a slightly thicker material and are cut in such a way that they are both comfortable and flattering on. The waistband is wide and soft, hitting just above the hip bone and doesn’t cut into you. Some may find the material to be to outlandish, but I grew to love the print. They are incredibly short but stayed put throughout a 10km run without riding up. The biggest drawback is the high price which puts them out of the budget for most runners.

Good to Know

Sizing | these run small and although I usually fit in a small or extra-small, the medium was a perfect fit. The Maaji Gleaming Canvas Shorts are available from small to large.

Comfort | Super comfortable – the thicker material and wider waistband made them the most comfortable short shorts out of the lot.

Pockets | 1 small pocket inside the front which can fit a key and a tampon.

Noticeable Features | The mesh insets and darker side panels makes them more flattering and the bright pattern will make you stand out. They also come in a cute reusable plastic bag (great for storing your bikinis or underwear whilst traveling or valuables at the beach)

Best for | Track sessions or short runs, yoga and Pilates classes.

Under Armour UA Fly-By Printed Shorts, R599

The Best Running Shorts for Women this Summer - Under Armour UA Fly-By Printed Shorts,

These Under Armour shorts are a modern update on the classic running short. They’re a looser cut with a light breathable fabric making them incredibly comfortable over longer distances. What makes them unique is the updated and shaped hemline which makes them more streamlined and less bulky. I loved the print, loose fit and the two side pockets which are great for storing tissues (for those, who like me will never step out the door without a tissue handy).

Good to Know

Sizing | The relaxed fit of the shorts meant that the small felt a bit loose and I could’ve easily sized down to an extra-small. The Under Armour UA Fly-By Printed Shorts are available in extra small to extra-large.

Comfort | The looser fit makes them super comfortable. The waistband hits just above the hip bones and whilst it’s a thin band, it doesn’t dig into your skin. They are a longer length short providing a bit more coverage.

Pockets | There is one small inner pocket in which you can fit keys, a tampon or small ipod. The 2 side pockets are great for tissues or gels.

Noticeable Features | These are a very basic running short, but you can get them in 10 different colours and prints. The two side pockets are the most noticeable added feature and they’re also extremely affordable.

Best For | Road running. They’re super comfortable and a fuss free design. I’d happily run an ultra-marathon in them.

Second Skins Lite Run Short, R199

The Best Running Shorts for Women this Summer - Second Skins Lite Run Short

The material and cut of these shorts reminds us of the typical South African running club short. The cut is very old-school but functional. Not the most flattering or fashionable but they were incredibly comfortable on a long Sunday run. I’d stray away from using these over very long distances as I found the thin waistband which hit just below the navel can become a bit restrictive. They are however the least expensive option making them a great starter short.

Good to Know

Sizing | These are a small cut short so size one up, the 32 was a bit tight, the 34 felt good. These are available from sizes 32-44.

Comfort | Yes the shorts are comfortable, but if you prefer a looser waist fit, the thin waistband can feel a bit snug.

Pockets | 1 small pocket inside the front. It’s big enough to fit a key or tampon.

Noticeable Features | These are a very basic running short, simple cut and material but they do the job. They are also available in a variety of colours so if you are required to wear a specific coloured short for your running club, you’ll be able to find an exact match. They are also a South African made short so you get to support a local business.

Salomon Trail Runner Short, R749

The Best Running Shorts for Women this Summer Salomon Trail Short

These Salomon running shorts feel great to the touch and look like they’ll be a long distance runner’s dream. Putting them on I was a lot less enthralled – they have a boxy fit and a very masculine look, I think the bigger sizing did contribute to that look. Aside for the panty liner bunching into a wedgie and causing irritation – which I do believe was a direct cause the shorts being too big on me, it was hard to ignore how brilliant the fabric is. I set out for a 10km run on a very hot morning and the soft breeziness enhanced my run. They offer great leg coverage for those worried about shorts riding up and the ample pockets mean you can stuff all your long distance essentials in them without worrying about taking additional pouches. My biggest recommendation is to try them on before you buy – if you get the sizing right and are happy with the look, these are a worthwhile investment.

Good to know

Sizing | The medium I tried were well above my XS-S sizing. Judging on fit I’d say these are a larger cut short so size down if you’re in between sizes.

Comfort | They are comfortable, but the wrong sizing caused the panty liner to bunch into a wedgie which caused irritation.

Pockets | 1 zipped pocket above the bum big enough to fit keys and an iPhone. There also 2 pockets on the side perfect for storing gels, energy bars and chews.

Noticeable Features | The fabric is a highlight. The shade was a bit too in between mustard and lime yellow for the right impact, but the feel is incredibly silky soft and breezy. It also has so many pockets which makes it a winner for long runs.

Best for | Long distance running both trail and road.

Move Pretty Zepant, R399

The Best Running Shorts for Women this Summer - Move Pretty Zepant

The colourful material of these Move Pretty Shorts make them a stand out. They’re made from a Technical Poly Spandex that feel similar to a swimming costume material. The 4 way stretch makes them comfortable and you almost forget you are wearing anything. They’re a great pair of shorts for track running or a gym session especially in the heat. The waistband hits just above the hipbone and the sparkly silver material was a bit itchy.  The shorts do ride up, so I found myself adjusting them quite a bit and the thin material whilst cool also created a bit of a camel-toe – I would recommend wearing a longer length top with them.

Good to know

Sizing | The sizing is perfect. Available from small to large.

Comfort | Aside from the waistband, they’re very light and comfortable.

Pockets | None

Noticeable Features | The colourful prints (they come in 3 variations) and the fact that they’re locally made (Olympic triathlete Mari Rabie is one of the co-founders), so you get to support local products.

Best For | These are a go-to short for track sessions, gym workouts and yoga.

Cotton on Gym Short, R249

The Best Running Shorts for Women this Summer - Cotton On Gym Short

These cotton on gym shorts come in multiple patterns and have a very silky feel to the fabric. The soft and wide waste band hits just below the navel and is incredibly comfortable. With no pockets and a 4 way stretch these are best suited to track workouts where you want something incredibly light that moves seamlessly with you. They do ride up, and I found myself adjusting them during a speed session. They’re best suited for track sessions or the gym. I also did find myself spending a full day in them very comfortably.

Good to Know

Sizing | True to size. The Cotton On Gym Shorts are available from extra small to extra-large.

Comfort | Very comfortable short, but they do ride up during running.

Pockets | None

Noticeable Features | The material is super soft and the waistband is wide and hits below the navel making for a flattering cut.

Best for | Track, yoga and gym or just lounging around in.

Maaji Reversible Ink Shorts, R1550.00

The Best Running Shorts for Women this Summer - Maaji Reversible Ink Short

While these shorts are pretty and comfortable their most notable feature – being that they’re reversible is also one of the biggest downsides. Being reversible they don’t have any pockets and are missing an inner panty which is essential to a loose running short. They’re comfortable over short distances and I’d strongly suggest wearing a boy short underneath them for more coverage as the legs are quite loose. These weren’t the best running shorts, but you’ll find yourself reaching for them for walks and everyday wear. .

Good to know

Sizing | True to size. The Maaji Reversible Ink Shorts are available from small to large.

Comfort | As an athleisure short or walking short, they’re very comfortable; but for running the lack of attached panty makes them less so.

Pockets | None

Noticeable Features | They are reversible, so you get two shorts for the price of one. They also come in a cute reusable plastic bag (great for storing your bikinis or underwear whilst traveling or valuables at the beach)

Best For | Walking and lounging

Cotton on Gym Move Jogger, R199

The Best Running Shorts for Women this Summer - Cotton On Jogger

These shorts look great off and I couldn’t wait to try them. They have a loose boy short attached to the insides which although visually make them stand out, I found to be a hindrance. During a short 5km run, the attachment rode up, creating the dreaded bunched wedgie feeling. I feel if the inside attachment were a tighter fit, this might not have happened, so maybe sizing down would solve this. The overall feel of the short was incredibly soft and comfortable and while I was stationery, gave me no hassles. The inner pocket was also so tiny, that I could not find it initially. I’d definitely recommend these for a breezy athleisure wear during hot summer days – at that price tag, you can’t go wrong.

Good to Know

Sizing | True to size. The Cotton On Gym Shorts are available from extra small to extra-large. Try size down to see if you can solve the inner boy short fit.

Comfort | Very comfortable short, but they do ride up during running.

Pockets | A tiny front inner pocket that will fit a key. You do need to find it first though.

Noticeable Features | The material is super soft and the waistband is wide and hits below the navel making for a flattering cut.

Best for | Short Runs, yoga and gym or just lounging around in.
