TASTE TEST: FRUIT BOWL FRUIT FLAKES
Fruit-Bowl Fruit Flakes are tiny little flakes of dried apple and fruit purees.  They come in plain (in
strawberry flavour) as well as coated in yogurt
 (strawberry, raspberry and blackcurrant flavours).

Fruit Bowl Fruit Flakes come in handy single serve packets (20g regular and 25g yogurt coated).

Fruit Bowl directs their products towards kids, with the aim of providing parents with natural and convenient fruit based snacks to fuel their kids with. In fact they are so beloved by parents, that they were recently a finalist in the Mama Magic parents’ Choice Awards.

Despite being directed at kids, they’re great for adults too, especially those with a sweet tooth.

In our taste test, the plain strawberry flakes tasted exactly like the strawberry fruit peeler. They were just flaked instead of twisted into a long rope. We can see ourselves adding them to homemade granola instead of cranberries and sprinkling them on top of yogurt and ice cream for a sweet
topping.

The yogurt coated flakes are bigger and look like tiny pebbles. The fruit flake is covered in a white yogurt coating. At first bite the plain yogurt coating overpowers the fruit taste, so much so that we thought we wouldn’t be able to differentiate between the various flavours, but once the yogurt coating melts in your mouth – and it does! You’re left with a chewy centre flavoured like the fruit peelers. For yogurt and fruit lovers, this as a snack is a no brainer.

Pros:

Fruit Flakes are a better alternative to sweets. By using fruit purees instead of artificial flavours to flavour them, they are healthier, natural and taste authentic.

They come in handy single serve bags, so you can easily pop them into your kids lunch or store them in your bag for moments when you or your kids needs something sweet to snack on.

Because of the fruit purees inside the flakes, they actually count as one of your five fruits a day – a great way to get a serving in!

They’re gluten free

The plain fruit flakes have no added sugar

They can be used as a snack or to top yogurts or even ice cream.

Cons:

The yogurt flakes taste more like the yogurt coating than the fruit, so if it’s the sweet fruit taste you want choose the plain flakes instead.

They contain wheat and the yogurt flakes contain dairy, so those with allergies should avoid
them.

At R12.90 per packet they are more costly than most kids snacks, but if you already shop in the health aisles, this will be an average price.

They come in non-sealable bags (like a chip bag) and tear easily when opened, so if you’re giving them to kids rather put them into a ziplock to avoid spills.
