“Abandon anything about your life and habits that might be holding you back. Learn to create your own opportunities. Know that there is no finish line; fortune favors action. Race balls-out toward the extraordinary life that you’ve always dreamed of, or still haven’t had time to dream up. And prepare to have a hell of a lot of fun along the way.”
– Sophia Amoruso
South Africa celebrates women’s month in August, which culminates in Woman’s Day on the 9th of August. It’s a month which celebrates women’s achievements and the role they’ve played in society.
More than another holiday, the 9th – Woman’s Day, recognizes the 20 000 women from all walks of life who united in a mass demonstration to the Union Buildings in Pretoria in 1956. Lead by Lilian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Albertina Sisulu, and Sophia Williams-De Bruyn; they protested against the unjust pass laws enforced on women in South Africa.
The notion of #girlbosses, #ladybosses, #girlpower and #leaningin is almost an oversaturated concept illustrated by picture perfect Instagram pictures and linear paths towards achieving one’s goals.
However, if you look deeper into the Girl Boss movement, you will discover a group of women who are discovering their voices, asking for what they want, learning that their dreams don’t have to stay dreams and supporting one another in the ups, downs, failure, and successes.
We’ve chosen this theme, not for its glittery inspirational quotes and pretty pictures, but for what we feel it means and how it ties into August being Woman’s Month. We hope to be able to share content that highlights the real and raw women doing incredible things as well as female apps, businesses, products and of course beauty.
