Green Spirulina Smoothie Bowl

Green Spirulina Smoothie Bowl

Spirulina though confused with a plant is actually bacteria. It’s a cynobacteria (blue bacteria) which has a whole host of health benefits. Spirulina, a natural algae product is incredibly high in protein, in fact it has the highest concentration of protein (by dry weight) than any other food, consisting of 65-71% of protein depending on the variety. It contains all the essential amino acids making it a complete protein and is a good source of antioxidants, B-vitamins and other nutrients.

It is however potent tasting, so you want to go easy on the amount you’re using. I go for ½ to 1 teaspoon of spirulina so it doesn’t overpower the smoothie. Start with 1/2 teaspoon, taste and add more if you want. I used this green spirulina for this spirulina smoothie bowl, but any would work it would just alter the colour of the smoothie. For an added boost I included some Maca Powder which is great for recovery and hemp seeds for added protein.

It’s not the tastiest smoothie bowl I’ve made; but it’s really good for you and simple to make.
