June Shopping Guide - You are What You Eat

A shopping guide made for foodies

This month’s theme was “you are what you eat”, focused on all things foods and diets. Our shopping guide features some old favorites and new finds perfect for any healthy foodie. There are also two giveaways in it!

The Flavour Bible by Karen Page and Andrew Dornenburg

R549 at Takealot

June Shopping Guide - The Flavor Bible

This reads more like a cooking encyclopedia than a recipe book. It draws on dozens leading chef’s combined experience to form the definitive guide to creating deliciousness in any dish. Thousands of ingredients are listed alphabetically along with suggestions on how to prepare them and what to cook alongside them.

I use it as a reference whenever I’m looking for inspiration for new flavor combination or when I’m using an ingredient I’ve never used before. If you love cooking it’s a great resource.

2. Nakd Bars

June Shopping Guide - Nakd Bars

A favorite of ours, Nakd bars come in 9 different flavors. They’re made up of nuts and dried fruits and the odd extra flavor like chocolate or mint – no additives or preservatives. They’re also gluten-free, vegan and kosher. We love the peanut delight, cocoa mint, and café mocha.

June Shopping Guide - lindt-coverture

This is the best dark chocolate you can use in baking. It comes in nifty little pentagons which can be melted down, chopped up and added to cookies or plopped onto a cookie to make a thumbprint. It’s also one of my non-basic essentials to have.

6. Imiso Ceramics Breakfast Set

Available at Imiso Ceramics

June Shopping Guide - ceramics

It’s no secret that we love food bowls and breakfast dishes which is why we set out to find Proudly South African crockery to put them in. We were delighted to discover Imiso Ceramics created by Zizipho Poswa and Mojolandile Dyalvane. Based at the Old Biscuit Mill in Cape Town, this truly South African studio creates distinctive and functional clay art.

Andile and Zizipho established Imiso in 2005 and have a collective 15 years of experience in creative design and manufacturing. It was their skyline hospitality range that drew us in but ordering 50 bowls as a minimum quantity seemed overkill. Luckily everything they create is a masterpiece and they offer incredible breakfast sets available on order at their gallery which requires no minimums and is sure to brighten any breakfast dish.

These nifty mesh bags are a great alternative for those plastic bags you use to put produce in. They’re small enough to fit in your bag so you can whip them out next time you’re buying some loose produce. They’re breathable and can also be used to store produce at home in your fridge.

9. Rise Up and Recover

Free on Itunes App store and Google Play

June Shopping Guide - Rise and Recover App

Rise Up and Recover was created by Jessica Raymond and forms part of the Recovery Warriors Brand which also includes a podcast and blog. It’s intended as an eating disorder recovery app, but is a great app for anyone who wants to have a healthier relationship with food and practice mindful eating.

It lets you track everything you ate as well as where you were, who you were with and how you felt. The app also lets you track certain behaviours, set personal reminders for yourself, store motivational messages and log in your thoughts. It doesn’t track calories but instead allows you to connect the food you eat to behaviours and feelings. You’re able to see if certain situations cause bad eating habits or how eating good food makes you feel and encourages you to eat mindfully instead of eating without thinking.

10. Nutribullet

R1895 at Faithful to Nature

June Shopping Guide - nutribulletThe blender is my most used kitchen appliance (aside from a kettle) and one of the most versaitile. It’s essential for making smoothies, dips, hummus and creamy soups. The Nutribullet can also be used to grind up oats for oat flour and chop nuts. If you want something bigger, the Vitamix is one of the best blenders you can invest in and can do 35 different tasks from crushing ice to kneading dough.
