I’ve had the Kayla Itsines 28 Days Healthy Eating & Lifestyle Guide for about 6 weeks. Here’s my personal thoughts and experience with her newest book.
The Pros of Kayla Itsines 28 Days Healthy Eating & Lifestyle Guide
The book has an awesome design and layout, many beautiful pictures of the recipes plus a truly educational section on healthy eating. Contrary to popular belief, the Kayla eating guide includes more than enough calories for your daily intake of food. The meal plan is easy to follow and the recipes aren’t too complex. The meals are also interchangeable as there are four categories; so you can pick and choose according to your preferences.
Following the plan has forced me to adapt my eating habits to include more healthy food and nourish my body while training. In general I loved the book, the variety it offers and especially the Naughty but Nice section. Expect loads of flavourful dishes with spices and herbs (now is the time to get that home-grown herb garden growing!) Not for one moment did I felt depraved from any food group or hungry. The book embraces a balanced eating lifestyle to the fullest and does not cut out any food groups.
The Cons of Kayla Itsines 28 Days Healthy Eating & Lifestyle Guide
The diversity of the recipes meant a huge shopping list where sometimes only a few of each ingredient is required, which could lead to wastage. I worked my way around it by capturing all the recipes in excel with its ingredients and adapting the plan to include similar ingredients for each week.
I did find the portions too big and I started cutting out the second snack of the day or swapping lunches for snacks rather. Even my husband complained it was too much food! For someone who already meal planned and prepped, the book took this to the next level and by week four I felt a little overwhelmed by all the planning.
Other than the above challenges, I highly recommend the book. It’s a great starting point to form healthy eating habits; a guide to healthy meals if you have no ideas on what to make for dinner; and if you have the time available, to follow it more or less.
I’ve always believed that I should stop eating when I am full, so don’t feel guilty if you can’t eat it all. Adjust the portions if you have to. The strong focus on balance in the books I feel is the best way to lead this massive, worldwide BBG Community. Kayla is teaching girls to eat healthy (and enough!) while having a good relationship with food. Something we all as women have struggled with at some stage of our life.
