Can Maca Powder Help You Recover Faster?

Can Maca Powder Help You Recover Faster?

In his first book, Thrive Foods, Brendan Brazier writes that adding Maca Powder to his post workout recovery drinks has led to strength gains, allowing him to lift more weight and recover faster.

Maca Powder, an ancient root of Bolivia and Peru is an adaptogen, meaning it “curtails the effects of stress by aiding the regeneration of the adrenal glands”. It also helps lower cortisol levels, which improves sleep quality, thereby increasing waking energy. Maca Powder also contains steroid like compounds which promote quick regeneration of fatigued muscle tissue making it the ideal addition to your post workout nutrition.

It may be ancient, but Maca Powder is ideal for the modern world.

Brendan Frazier recommends using gelatinised maca which has a nutty taste and dissolves more easily than regular Maca. The reason is that gelatinisation removes the hard to digest starchy components of the Maca Root resulting in an easily digestable, quickly assimilated and more concentrated form of Maca.

How do you use Maca Powder?

Maca powder, is best used in small quantities – think teaspoons. I personally like adding a teaspoon to smoothies, like this Maca Mango smoothie – it does have a taste, but if you use a small amount it’s not overpowering. You can also add t to baked goods – like we did here with these homemade Coco Pops. It also goes very well in hot chocolate (recipe below).

Add it to your post workout drink, if you want to use it as a recovery aide, or to a late night hot chocolate to help you sleep better.
