A Skincare Journey with Optiphi [Part 1: cleanser + moisturizer]

A skincare Journey with Optiphi

A few months ago, we sat down with the Optiphi team to discuss skincare. Otiphi is a local skincare brand that offers both a skincare range and skin treatments. They also offer a unique Skin DNA test that allows them to tailor a skin care routine to your genetic makeup. They looked at our skin (yikes), discussed our skin concerns and suggested a skincare routine for both of us. A skincare routine that would take us back to the basics of skincare – just a cleanser, moisturiser and SPF. This, they told us would allow us to reset our skin and slowly be able to tell what works and what doesn’t.  When they sent us each our new skincare set, we pushed aside the bottles of toners, peels, concentrates and masks and were intent on using only what they’d sent to truly test out each product.

It’s been nearly 3 months since we started using Optiphi skincare, which is ample time to see results and notice any irritations. Feige has been using their Active cleanser and moisturiser. Zissy has been using their Classic cleanser and moisturiser. Below we each share our reviews on the products we’ve been using.

Zissy’s Optiphi Skincare Routine

A skincare Journey with Optiphi [Part 1: cleanser + moisturiser]

My skin is generally unproblematic. That’s not to say I never break out. I do get the typical hormonal pimple every now and then; but it’s not a regular occurrence and when I do get it, it’s usually one or two that go away within a week or two. My main concerns after our first meeting were dryness and anti-aging.

Optiphi Pure Cleansing Wash

What is it?

The Optiphi Pure Cleansing Wash is a delicate daily cleanser. It has a milky texture and does not foam. It has mild soap-free formulation that is suitable for all skin types and conditions and is ideal for a dry and sensitive skin. It also has a balanced PH of 5.5 which restores the skin’s protective barrier.

Notable ingredients

Allantoin and Salicylic Acid: Allantoin is a moisturising ingredient which is gentle and non-irritating. Salicylic Acid is the most common ingredient used to prevent and treat breakouts. It is a beta hydroxy acid that is oil-soluble allowing it to work deeper and penetrate your pores to unblock them. Allantoin and Salicylic Acid allow for a deep cleanse without sensitivity and can be used over the delicate eye area.

Twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening.

I previously used to wash my face just once a day, at night. In the morning I would splash it with cold water, using a face wash only if I had done a particularly sweaty workout or gone to a workout class and touched germy equipment. For this trial, I did a full skincare routine both in the morning and at night, save for the few mornings I forgot.

Review and Results

Optiphi is a high-end skincare brand. The packaging is incredibly luxe and Feige and I gushed over them as soon as we opened the boxes. But you’re not spending money on a beauty product for its looks. It’s not a décor item ?. The cleanser as advertised is incredibly gentle and has a pleasant mild smell. Its milky texture leaves your skin moisturised ie. it doesn’t feel “thirsty” like you need to slather moisturiser over your skin right away. I love that the bottle is a large 220ml which means it lasts longer and needs replacing less often. Personally, I loved it, it’s worked well for me and my skin. In fact, my skin has been overall incredibly clear.

Optiphi Classic Restore Therapy

What is it?

The Optiphi Classic Restore Therapy is a moisturiser. Ideally meant for nighttime use, but can be used in the daytime as well. It’s intended for anti-aging and promotes dermal restoration.

Notable Ingredients

Oligopeptide, Peptide-7 and Green Algae Extract: These 3 ingredients work together to improve the skin’s firmness, elasticity and moisture content. Olgopeptide is a blend of several fatty and amino acids. It’s used in anti-aging products as it stimulates collagen production and help skin cells remain more stable. Peptide-7 is also an anti-aging ingredient that helps with skin elasticity and the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles. Green Algae extract is a marine algae and has one of the most abundant sources of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants and essential fatty acids that are readily absorbed to nourish and rejuvenate the skin. It’s key for hydration and anti-aging.

Retinol: Retinol is a fat-soluble derivative of Vitamin A which is easily absorbed by the body. It’s a popular anti-aging ingredient as it exfoliates, aids in the production of collagen, and fights free radicals. In this moisturiser, it’s combines with Ascorbic Acid and Vitamin B3 to rejuvenate the skin and targets uneven skin tone and pigmentation.

Hyaluronic Acid and Imperata Cylindrica Extract: Hyaluronic acid has the ability to draw and hold water and is used to hydrate and soothe the skin. Imperata Cylindrica Extract is natural moisturizer.

Twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening. Done after cleansing and before applying SPF.

Review and Results

The Optiphi Classic Restore Therapy moistizer is an incredibly rich cream which makes your face feel instantly hydrated and glowy. The most notable result I had from using it consistently for over a month was hydration. My skin went from being on the dry side to being well hydrated. I’m uncertain on the anti-aging effects. I still have fine lines by my eyes, although the line from my perma-burrowed eyebrows isn’t as strong anymore. Something important to note is that if you’re allergic to Vitamin A or are on Roaccutane or Cortisone you should not use the Optipihi Classic Restore Therapy.

Overall Skin Review + Results

I love the Optiphi products. The only product I used in addition to the cleanser and moisturiser was a Vitamin C serum I wanted to finish. Vitamin C is also known for its ability to prevent acne and reduce wrinkles, so the use of it may have contributed to the overall result.  Overall, my skin has been looking great. The last major breakout was about a month prior to using Optiphi. I have had two minor breakouts which consisted of a tiny spot on my right chin (which is a hormonal breakout spot). They both were small and disappeared within a week without needing to treat them.

Last week I went for an Optiphi Repair and Hydrate Facial at Life Day Spa. It was an amazing experience and consisted of cleansing, exfoliating, extractions, a facial massage, a hydrating mask and a high intensity contraption used to reduce congestion.

During the facial the facialists did a skin Analysis, which was incredibly helpful in determining the effects of the products I’d been using and learning about products I should add to my skincare routine. Overall, she said my skin was good. My hydration levels were great which means that the cleanser and moisturiser were working and target one – eliminating dryness had been achieved. However, she ever so kindly noted the crow’s feet around my eyes and suggested an eye cream to combat that, so the anti-aging effects of the cream weren’t as successful. She also pointed out pigmentation on my skin. I hadn’t considered my pigmentation levels prior to this (I have freckles and the sunspots blend in with them), so I cannot say whether or not the retinol in the moisturiser has helped fade them. However, she believes that peels are the best way to reduce and remove pigmentation and marks left by acne.

Feige’s Skincare Routine

A skincare Journey with Optiphi [Part 1: cleanser + moisturiser]

I’ve recently delved into my skin struggles. For the past year I’ve been suffering from a serious case of adult acne. I’ve had so many flare ups that I can’t quite distinguish from memory if it has stopped at all during the past 12 months.

When we met with Optiphi, I was going through a particularly aggravated phase. After aggressive use of pimple zapping products my skin was feeling incredibly inflamed, irritated and sensitive. Worst of all was that the zapping hadn’t cured the breakouts. The target was to go back to basics, reset my skin, restore balance and ultimately calm it down before tackling other skincare issues, like the scars pimples leave behind.

Optiphi Active Facial Cleanser

What is it?

The Optiphi Active Facial Cleanser is a multipurpose cleanser that cleanses, tones and exfoliates. It has a PH of 5.5 to restore balance and it can be used to remove makeup. It’s soap free, gentle and is suitable for all skin types.

Notable Ingredients

Salicylic Acid: Salicylic Acid is an ingredient used to prevent and treat breakouts. It is a beta hydroxy acid that is oil-soluble allowing it to work deeper and penetrate your pores to unblock them. It also helps calm the skin and with exfoliation.

Much like Zissy’s classic range, this cleanser is gentle on the skin. The Optiphi active facial cleanser is a clear unscented light gel, that spreads well but doesn’t foam. I’ve been using non foaming face cleansers for a few years and prefer them.

It leaves your skin feeling clean and fresh, without any zingy sensations or post washing dryness. The only issue I had with it was when using it as a makeup removal step, I found it to sting my eyes – after this happened a few times, I went back to pre-removing makeup before my wash

Optiphi Active Moisture Control Light

What is it?

Optiphi Active Moisture Control Light is a very light moisturiser that provides long lasting skin hydration. It also contains antioxidants in it which help prevent damage from free radicals which leads to aging. It’s suitable to be used both at night and in the morning.

Notable Ingredients

Hyaluronic Acid and Imperata Cylindrica Extract: Hyaluronic acid has the ability to draw and hold water and is used to hydrate and soothe the skin. Imperata Cylindrica Extract is natural moisturizer. Together they provide intense 24-hour hydration.

Lactic Acid: Lactic acid is used for exfoliation, to lighten dark spots and improve the look of fine lines and wrinkles.

Vitamin B3: Vitamin B3, also known as Niacinamide is a powerful ingredient used for brightening and hydration. It’s a water soluble vitamin our bodies don’t make which means to get it we need to either ingest it or apply it topically. It’s also incredibly restorative and can fight the signs of aging.

Ceramides: Ceramides are a type of fat. Our skin produces ceramides but as we age, we loose them. People who have acne, rosacea and eczema often have lower levels of ceramides. Ceramides, being fat, are key to give your skin that plump and youthful look. They’re an ingredient often from in skincare and help with aging and hydration.

The packaging of the moisture control light is exceptionally beautiful. As Zissy said though, you aren’t buying a shelf ornament – it’s about what is inside. This moisturiser is incredible light and spreads very well. One pump covers my whole face and much like the cleanser, I love how it leaves your skin feeling calm and balanced.

Overall Skin Review + Results

What impressed me the most about the Optiphi cleanser and moisturiser was how well my skin immediately responded to it. When my skin doesn’t like a product, it reacts badly immediately. With these, I had no bad reactions or down time while my skin got used to it. Very quickly it calmed down the sensitivity my skin was feeling and in the areas that aren’t prone to breakouts, I thought my skin looked really good.

I would love to say this skin routine cleared my skin and stopped my breakouts, but it didn’t. What it did do is reset the balance of angry sensitive skin and made it feel much better. One could say that the goal of restoring balance was achieved.

One month into the Optiphi try test, I had decided that a great skincare product alone wasn’t going to help me clear the adult acne. I acknowledged the problem is internal and started a deep dive of one month experiments. At present I am closing out a month of high dose vitamin supplementation and have seen the most promising results from that. The breakouts haven’t cleared completely but it looks like it’s getting there.

Last week at our Optiphi Repair and Hydrate Facial at Life Day Spa my skin was also analysed. My facialist noted that all the acne marks along my jawline appeared to be in the healing phase and at the time I only had one small pimple on my chin. She said these scars would best be treated with a combination of peels and microneedling.

What she noted as the biggest area of concern on my skin was dehydration. I found this extremely interesting as one of the vitamins I have been supplementing with is Vitamin A, which is known to be drying.

She worked on the hydration levels of my skin with a Hyaluronic acid mask, and since then my skin has been feeling much more hydrated.

Optiphi Canvas Range Sun Protection Cream SPF30

A skincare Journey with Optiphi [Part 1: cleanser + moisturiser]

What is it?

The Optiphi Canvas range is a mineral and chemical SPF which uses three active ingredients to provide full spectrum coverage. It also goes beyond protecting against just UV light and protects against infrared radiation and Blue Light. As it does contain titanium oxide, it works immediately.

Notable Ingredients

Mineral Blockers: Titanium Oxide which blocks both UVA and UVB rays.

Sunflower Sprout Extract and Caesalpinia Spinos Fruit Extract provide advanced protection against the free radical formation from Infrared Radiation (IR) and High Energy Visible (HEV) ‘Blue’ Light.

Daily before sun exposure.

We first introduced you to this SPF here. It’s an incredibly light SPF that feels and smells like a moisturiser, not an SPF. It works brilliantly under makeup and gives you’re a subtle glow if you wear it alone. It’s a favorite everyday SPF – it’s light, non-greasy and works.
