Gauteng
Varsity Kudus 15km
Date: Sunday, 8 January
Location: Wits University, Braamfontein
This race marks the official start of road running in Gauteng in 2017. The 15km, whilst scenic is a tough route that takes you through the hilly suburbs of Parktown, Parkview and Westcliff.

Les Mills Mega Workout Party
Date: Saturday, 14 January
Location: Emperors Palace, Kempton Park
If working out more is a new year’s resolution, this mega workout party will kick you into gear. It starts at 8am and has 5 different workouts scheduled until 1pm

Muddy Puppy Event #1
Date: Sunday, 22 January
Location: Alberton, Johannesburg
The Muddy Puppy is a 4km obstacle course for you and your dog. There’s a medal at the end and if you don’t have a dog but like obstacle courses that involve climbing, jumping, slipping and mud you can get a solo entry.

WARRIORFIT OCR Workshop hosted by OCT South
Date: Friday, 27 January – Sunday, 29 January
Location: Alberton, Johannesburg
This 3-day workshop trains you to blast through one of the many tough obstacle races (Think Warrior, Impi, Jump City, The Grind). You’ll learn mental training, tricks, OCR specific training, running, solid grip strength and more. The workshop caters to all levels and there’s also a special course geared to kids between 11-17 years of age.

35th Johnson Crane Marathon Half Marathon
Date: Sunday, 29 January
Location: Benoni
This is the first Comrades and Two Oceans qualifier in Gauteng and is one of the best for those seeking a PB. The route is flat and fast with the marathon double lapping the half. There’s also a 10km and 5km fun run. It’s also timed so make sure to wear a championchip chip.

Value Logistics Fast One Cycle Race 2017
Date: Sunday, 29 January
Location: Vanderbijlpark
There are two routes, a 49km fun ride and a 97km ride that counts as a CT Cycle tour seeding event.

Kite Windsurf Cup 2017 by S’n’C
Date: Monday, 2 January – Sunday, 8 January
Location: Langebaan
There are 5 races taking place from Langebaan. They’re open to all kiters, windsurfers and foilers of all levels.

Best Worm Farming Workshop
Date: Saturday, 14 January
Location: Tokai, Cape Town
Karin Parkin, who has been growing health food and medicine for over 20 years will be leading this workshop. You’ll learn how to build and keep a worm farm and for an added fee can make a two tier worm farm at the workshop.

Spur Cape Town Trail Series
Date: Series starts Sunday, 15 January until 26 February
Location: various locations, Cape Town
The first Spur Summer Trail Series for 2017 kicks off in January. There are 4 trail events in total, each with a short (6km) and long (9km) route option. Two of the trails take place in January, the first at Lebanon Forest, Elgin Valley and the second at the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens.

Night Nation Run “I run for the after party”
Date: Saturday, 21 January
Location: Grand Parade, Cape Town
The Night Nation Run is a new 5km fun night run which incorporates music, lights and a festival atmosphere into the run. If you like Neon Run, Adida’s Why I Run or the Nike Run’s you’ll enjoy this. There will be DJ’s along the route playing Electric Dance Music and an after party at the finish featuring top DJ’s.

The BBG Cape Town Girls are hosting a meetup which kickstarts a 12 week BBG challenge. The event is free, so if you’re thinking of, or have done BBG this is a great way to meet girls to keep you motivated.

N3TC Drak Challenge Canoe Marathon
Date: Saturday, 21 January –Sunday, 22 January
Location: Underberg
This is a two day canoe marathon starting with a 26km course on day 1 and ending with a 39km course on day two.

The Dolphin Mile Series begins and is also a chance to seed for the Midmar Mile.

Secret Sunrise Summer Swing PE
Date: Saturday, 7 January
Location: Port Elizabeth
The first Secret Sunrise event of the year kicks off in Port Elizabeth offering music and dance to an electro swing theme.

NFB Border 1000
Date: Sunday, 15 January
Location: East London
There are three different route distances to try, an 80km ride, 36km fun ride and a 20km youth ride where parents can accompany kids.

Free State Triathlon / Duathlon
Date: Saturday, 14 January
Location: Maselspoort
The Triathlon and Duathlon both have 3 distances to choose from – standard, sprint and super sprint. There’s also a kid event for ages 8-12 years.

Fedhealth XTERRA Buffelspoort
Date: Friday, 20 January – Sunday, 22 January
Location: Buffelspoort Dam
The off-road triathlon offers two events; full distance and light. You can expect scorching temperatures and rocky terrains – the mtb route is one of the toughest in the country! There’s also a kids event with 3 different events targeted at different age groups from 6 years to 15 years. Then on the 22nd there’s a trail run of 6 and 12km.

Ottosdal Nite Draf en Trap
Date: Saturday, 28 January
Location: Ottosdal Showgrounds, Central North West
One of the only night marathons you can do, this race offers a multitude of events. The races begin at night with a marathon, half, 10 and 5km. The next morning you can choose between varying distances in trail run or mountain bike. And if you’re lucky, you’ll walk away with a diamond!

Barberton XCM Mountain Bike Challenge
Date: Saturday, 28 January
Location: Barberton High School
The slogan of the MTB challenge is “not as delicate as a daisy” which speaks to the fact that this race is one of the toughest 1 day MTB events in South Africa. There are 5 routes for every type of rider from 20km all the way up to 110km.
